Pittsburgh Shootout
2025 Dates: July 31st, August 1st & 2nd
VDA & South Track
Get ready for the Annual Pittsburgh Shootout.
Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International, headquartered in Pittsburgh's backyard in Warrendale, Pennsylvania. The competition was started in 1980. The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a student design team to develop a small Formula-style racecar. The prototype racecar is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item.
The team must be made up entirely of active college students which places obvious restrictions on available work hours, skill sets, experience, and presents unique challenges that professional race teams do not face with a paid, skilled staff. The program is an excellent supplement to STEM programs like Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering/Technology as well as for programs such as Finance, Marketing, Logistics, and more.
The Pittsburgh Shootout is not sanctioned or organized by SAE International as a part of the SAE Collegiate Design Series. The event was started in 2016 by students at the University of Pittsburgh. Now run by the Pittsburgh Shootout LLC and a group of alumni volunteers, the event is a 1 day showcase of the teams in driving distance of Pittsburgh, PA. This event follows the official competition events, so it is a relaxed but competitive drive day for these schools.
