2024 Dates: September 13th, 14th, & 15th, 2024
Get ready for the 8th Annual Pittsburgh Shootout right here on Pittsburgh International Race Complex Soil.
Formula SAE is a student design competition organized by SAE International, headquartered in Pittsburgh's backyard in Warrendale, Pennsylvania. The competition was started in 1980. The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a student design team to develop a small Formula-style racecar. The prototype racecar is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item.
The team must be made up entirely of active college students which places obvious restrictions on available work hours, skill sets, experience, and presents unique challenges that professional race teams do not face with a paid, skilled staff. The program is an excellent supplement to STEM programs like Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering/Technology as well as for programs such as Finance, Marketing, Logistics, and more.
The Pittsburgh Shootout is not sanctioned or organized by SAE International as a part of the SAE Collegiate Design Series. The event was started in 2016 by students at the University of Pittsburgh. Now run by the Pittsburgh Shootout LLC and a group of alumni volunteers, the event is a 1 day showcase of the teams in driving distance of Pittsburgh, PA. This event follows the official competition events, so it is a relaxed but competitive drive day for these schools.
Schedule:
Fri 6pm - ??: Technical Inspection at night
Sat 8am - 10am: Technical Inspection

Sat 12:30pm - 1:30pm: Lunch
Sat 1:30pm - 5:30pm: Autocross
Sat ~2pm - 5:00: Acceleration
Notes for this year:
Acceleration, obviously.
We will continue to require passing rain test for EV teams at FSAE to be eligible to participate at the Pittsburgh Shootout
There will be a t-shirt opt-out on the reg form, which will knock $125 off your registration fee. Be aware this may be the last year we do t-shirts, they cost as much as the venue rental and it's hard on our bank account lol
Camping on site now costs money, but we have found a sponsor to cover it for 2024. For future years, be aware we may have to add a camping fee of $30 per team. But, for this year, make sure you thank Gecko Robotics!
We are moving the paddocks from across from the Pro Shop to the South Track Paddock, see below image. This gives us more space for more teams and electricity for about 10 student paddocks. The cost of electricity is $90 per spot, you don't need to commit to the spot now but if your team will need power I'd recommend calling dibs. There will be a spot on the registration form to indicate interest in the powered spots, and we will facilitate those reservations at a later date.
Because we are moving to the south paddock, teams will be allowed to drive cars with all tech stickers up the hill (towards the dynamic area) only. 10mph limit please, and you will stop at the intersection at the pro shop and push it to the dynamic area.
